Wednesday Studies There has been a slight adjustment in the Auditorium class for the summer. The Study on Acappella singing was scheduled to begin the last week of August and continue through most of September. That study has begun and will continue at least through the month of August. Catfish for Lunch Thanks to Bob and Jon Mark and the Hopper/Stevens Catfish farm we will be having Catfish Lunch for the Levy family on August 17th following morning worship. This event is always one of the favorites for the Levy family. The Hoppers generosity is greatly appreciated. Silencing of God For years we have heard a lot regarding the "separation of church and state." Is that statement in the Constitution or The Bill of Rights? Did the founding fathers advocate "separation of church and state"? Did they reject expressions of Christianity in government and public schools? A DVD series is now available that documents examples of how our nation was actually founded on Biblical priniciples, more specifically , Christian principles, and how that influence continued in education and many other daily activities in America. You may not agree with all the suggestions as what to do that Dr. Dave Miller, the presenter, will come to; but the facts leading up to his conclusions and suggestions are indisputable. I think you will find his series very informative. They are worth the time and effort that it takes in watching and listening. Each cassette contains two DVD's and the cost of each cassette is five dollars. Garry |

In the mid 70's I attended a workshop at Harding. Some of the presenters were Neale Pryor; Jack McKinney, James S. Woodruff, Jimmy Allen, Avon Malone and Jack Gray. It was probably the most helpful, challenging and troubling workshop I have ever attended. in the workbook that I came away with contained the following article - I would list the author but no name was attached. Because of the length I did edit out one paragraph. What should be done with Modern Day Preachers in churches of Christ? "Fling him into his office, tear off the sign "office" and nail on the sign, "study". Take him off the mailing list; lock him up with his books, his typewriter and his Bible. Slam him on his knees before great texts, broken hearts, the flippant lives of a superficial flock and the Holy God. Set a time clock for 40 hrs. a week. Require him to have something to say before he dares break the silence. Bend his knees in the lonesome valley, fir him form the PTA and cancel his country club membership. Burn his eyes with weary study, wreck his emotional poise with worry for God and make him exchange his pious stance for a humble walk with God and man. Make him spend and be spent for the flory of God. When at long last he dares assay the pulpit ask him if he has a word from God; if he does not, then dismiss him and tell him you can read the morning paper, digest the television commentaries, think through the days of superficial problems, manage the community drives and bless assorted baked potatoes and green beans ad infinitum better than he can. Command him not to come back until he has read and reread, written and rewritten, until he can stand up, worn and forlorn, and say, "Thus Saith the Lord." Thirty something years later I am even more convinced that what is needed in our sermon, Bible classes, daily conversations is not what we can down load from some smooth talking preacher but a "Thus Saith the Lord". Perhaps less time listening to what others say the Bible says and actually reading what the Bible says. Read it again for the first time. Garry |

The Wednesday Auditorium class has begun a study entitled "The Silencing of God". We are using as a study guide a dvd produced by Dr. Dave Miller. The following are some of the topics being covered. Did the Founding Fathers.... - advocate "separation of church and stat"?
- reject expressions of Christianity in government and public schools?
- Intend for federal institutions to be religiously neutral?
- approve of same-sex marriages?

September 28th - October 1,2008 The following excerpts are from an open letter from Howard Norton (Lectureship Director) and Lectureship Planning Committee. "This year's theme is "That We May Believe: Studies From the Gospel of John." In this study based on the writing of Jesus' beloved apostle, speakers will emphasize significant themes within the Gospel such as new birth, true worship, the kingship and divinity of Jesus, the compassion of Christ, and the victory of faith over unbelief. In addition to seven keynote lectures, we will offer approximately 150 hours of classes designed to stimulate your spiritual growth and challenge your faith." "Lectureship will offer classes in textual studies, archeology, preaching, church growth, counseling, church music, evangelism, missions, practical ministry, religious education, worship, church history and youth and family ministry." I truly hope that you will plan now to attend some or all of this year's Lectureship. From Levy, it is an hour's drive away. With the cost of gasoline, you may want to carpool. This will provide the following benefits; saves money (gas), great fellowship time and an opportunity to discuss that days lessons. |

I have lost count of the number of Medical Mission's that Levy has joined forces with Sylvan Hills and Somers Avenue. This year the group will be going to Matamoras, Mexico. They will again be building houses, finishing construction on a meeting place for the church and having a medical and eye clinic. These efforts do good for a lot of people, but more importantly, there will be a crew of people having personal Bible studies with those coming to obtain services of the clinics being offered. In the past, these efforts have been very fruitful in helping with the growth of the local congregations. We anticipate the same being true this year as well. As has been the custom, these three congregations, as well as several other individuals from other area congregations, will meet for a joint worship service. This year the joint worship will be on July 6th at Somers Avenue. There will not be evening services here at Levy. July 13th Ice Cream Social The Bible Study group that meets in the auditorium on Sunday evening has planned a Cake and Ice Cream social following July 13th worship services. All other groups and or individuals are invited to come and join us for worship, followed by Home Made Ice Cream. If you choose, you can bring cake or toppings. We will meet in the Ministry Center at 5 pm. Come join us; you will be glad you did! |
